In 2012–2013 there were 56,8 % more journey-stages by bus and 26,8 % more journey stages by Tube than in 2000–2001. This in- crease in demand has been particularly interesting as it has broken the link between economic growth and public trans- port ridership with passenger numbers continuing to grow since the advent of the recession in 2008. This unprecedented level of growth has led to a great demand to increase capacity on the transport network. Major projects have been initiated to extend tube lines, upgrade signalling to increase capacity and increase station capacity. The tube will also introduce a 24-hour service on Fridays and Satur- days from Autumn next year. TfL is also building a new Crossrail route between west of London (including Heathrow Airport) and east of London regeneration areas of Stratford and Canary Wharf, which is due to open in 2018. This will add 10% additional capacity to London’s rail network. There is also a programme of using space at stations in a different way. The most obvious manifestation of this is the concept of turning stations into community hubs, hosting a range of community based activities. Plans include bike clubs, retail outlets, e-learning facilities, libraries and even crèches, galleries and gyms. Earlier this year TfL introduced a «click and collect» service where customers could order their groceries on-line from major supermarkets and collect them later in the day from vans in station car parks. There is also a programme of installing lockers at stations for supermar- ket and Amazon orders and the first temperature-controlled lockers for chilled and frozen food have been introduced in the past month. geführt. Die TfL baut ausserdem momentan eine neue Regionalexpress- linie (Crossrail) zwischen dem Westen Londons (einschliesslich Flughafen Heathrow) und den Sanierungsgebieten Stratford und Canary Wharf im Osten der Stadt, die 2018 eröffnet wer- den soll. Dies wird die Kapazität des Londoner Streckennetzes um 10% erhöhen. Ausserdem existiert ein Programm, das die Nutzung von Raum an Stationen auf eine alternative Weise vor- sieht.
